How to use

Wet hands, apply a little soap, and lather. Scrub for at least 20 seconds, rinse well, and dry with a clean towel.

How to use

Brush the coat, then wet with lukewarm water. Massage shampoo into a lather; leave briefly for thicker coats as needed. Rinse thoroughly and towel dry.

Essential oils only, and any liquid can be made unscented. No preservatives in anything.

Soap, briefly

Two alkalis

Liquid soap is made with potassium hydroxide, bar soap with sodium hydroxide. Same chemistry. Potassium makes a soft paste that dissolves in water; sodium makes a hard bar.

Hot process

Akhlo liquids are cooked to a thick paste, tested, diluted with water, and rested before delivery.

Saponified

On a label, this means the oil has already reacted with the alkali. It is no longer oil. It is soap.

Ingredients

Is there lye in it?

Lye is how soap is made, not what is left in it. The alkali is used up turning oil into soap. Every batch is pH tested before it ships.

What is sodium gluconate?

A mild salt made by fermenting glucose. It binds the minerals in hard water so soap rinses clean instead of leaving scum.

Is it vegan?

Yes. Plant oils only. No animal fat, milk, or honey.

Preservatives, dyes, or fragrance oils?

None. Scent comes from essential oils. Color comes from the oil.

Any nut allergens?

Coconut is not a true nut, and the FDA no longer lists it as one, but some people with nut allergies still react. Organic Castile is olive oil only. Avocado can bother people with latex allergies.

Good to know

Isn’t pH 8 to 9 harsh?

All true soap is alkaline. That is what makes it soap. Washes sold at skin pH are synthetic detergents. Akhlo liquids test between 8 and 9.

Is it good for sensitive skin?

Akhlo makes no skin claims. The ingredient list is short and fully disclosed, and any liquid can be made unscented.

Is there an unscented option?

Yes, on request. Tea tree, peppermint, and eucalyptus bother some people, so unscented is the safe first pick.

Can the dish soap go in a dishwasher?

No. Real soap fills a dishwasher with suds. Hand washing only.

Using the liquids

Why doesn’t it foam like store soap?

Store washes use synthetic detergents and foam boosters. Soap lathers by oil: coconut makes big, quick bubbles; olive makes small, creamy ones. Less foam is not less clean.

Why is it cloudy, thick, or separated?

Nothing is added to fake a texture. Cold makes liquid soap cloudy or thick; warmth clears it. Shake it if it separates.

Can I thin it out?

Yes. It works at full strength, but thinner soap is handy in foaming pumps or for light jobs. Add water a little at a time, and thin only what you will use soon, since there are no preservatives.

Can I mix it with vinegar?

No. Acid turns soap back into fatty acids, and you get a greasy, curdled mess. Use them separately and rinse in between.

Simple Laundry Detergent

How much per load?

1 to 2 tablespoons for a medium load.

What does each ingredient do?

Coconut soap does the cleaning. Washing soda and borax soften the water and raise the pH so the soap works harder. Sodium gluconate handles hard water minerals.

What is sodium percarbonate?

Oxygen bleach. In water it releases oxygen, then breaks down into washing soda and water. No chlorine.

Is it HE safe?

Yes. It is low sudsing and made for hard water.

Does it work in cold water?

Yes, but the oxygen bleach works best in warm or hot water. Use warm for whites and heavy soil.

Can I wash wool or silk with it?

No. Oxygen bleach and high pH are hard on animal fibers. Use a wool wash for those.

Is it septic safe? What about graywater?

Fine for septic systems at normal doses. Don’t water plants with the rinse water: borax builds up in soil.

How should I store it?

Sealed and dry. Moisture clumps it and uses up the oxygen bleach. Keep away from children and pets.

A name with history

What does Akhlo mean?

It comes from the Akkadian akhlu, the alkaline washing solution in Mesopotamian soap-making. The mark is the Sumerian sign ME, for the principles that make things what they are.

The oldest known soap recipe, from a clay tablet at Girsu around 2500 BC, calls for water, alkali, and cassia oil. Akhlo uses the same three, in small batches in Dripping Springs, Texas.
